Para and VI Archers from around Australia are heading to Brisbane this weekend for the 2021 Para and VI National Championships.
After the event was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19, this tournament is a welcome event on the national calendar. It will also be the first National level archery tournament held in person in over 12 months, in Australia.
This tournament is a key competition for the Tokyo2020 Paralympic team selection.
About Para Nationals
Australia has a growing para archery community and we’re exciting to see Para Nationals continue to inspire these athletes. Para Nationals is about getting our archers ready for international tournaments, as such it follows the same style.
As different levels of ability categories the archers they must go through a classification process to ensure they’re in the right division. At this event we’ll have archers with vision impairment, shooting from a wheelchair or stool, or using alter equipment to help them hold the bow.
This is one of the many great things about the sport of archery. It’s very adaptable to an archer’s ability and there are many options to help cater equipment to enable a person to shoot.

Friday 26th – Para Classification
Saturday 27th – Opening ceremony and practice
Sunday 28th – Ranking rounds followed by individual matchplay and medal presentations

Paralympic Team Selection
Australia currently has one compound open quota spot for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. We are still hopeful Australia will win more spots later on the year.
The performance window for athletes to shoot the relevant scores was extended to 8 September 2019 and 1 March 2021, as a result of the postponed Tokyo Paralympics. The below archers have shot these scores:

After the 2021 Para & VI National Championships and 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Nomination Camp, the Selection Panel will rank all of the athletes who have registered their interest in being considered for Paralympic nomination based on the outlined criteria.
Once Archery Australia knows how many Paralympic quota spots are available to Australia, the Selection Committee will recommend one Athlete for each vacant quota position to the AA Board for ratification. From there, Archery Australia will nominate the Athlete(s) to Paralympic Australia.
