National Indoor Championships Is Just Around The Corner

The National Indoor Championships is quickly approaching on July 10-11. The Tournament regularly attracts over 750 archers from across the country making it Australia’s largest target archery event.

As an indoor event, archers aren’t impacted by environmental conditions such as rain and wind, which enables multiple venues across Australia to host the tournament at the same time in different locations. Regional Governing Bodies host events in their area which increases the accessibility of the tournament as archers don’t need to travel as far of take time off from work/university/school and other commitments.

Indoor is also a great equalizer in archery. As it is shot at 18m, archers don’t need high poundage in order to reach the target, unlike many outdoor distances. That means you’ll often get some junior archers outranking their open counterparts.

Explaining Indoor

All competitors will shoot a total for 120 arrows (total score of 1200) across 2 rounds:

  • Double Australian Indoor Round 18m (Vegas style) (2 x 30 arrow rounds)
  • Single World Archery Indoor 18m round (60 arrows)

The Australian round must be shot first. Archers will shoot 3 arrows per end with a 2-minute time limit.

Target Faces

Archers may choose to shoot either a single face (40cm) or a triple spot face (vertical for the WA round and triangle for the Australian round).

Scoring

Single faces are scored from 10 points to 1 point. Triple faces from 10 points to 6 points and any arrow outside of the scoring zone scored as a miss. For a triple face, archers can choose to shot the targets in any order but for scoring, there must only be 1 arrow in each target.

In the Double Australian Indoor Round, every archers scores 10s and Xs but the Xs are only used for countbacks on ties.

In the WA round, Sighted Compound are always aiming for the inner 10 (if the venue is not using the special Compound Indoor face). Everyone else, including Barebow Compound, are aiming for the whole 10 ring for a 10 score and any Xs scored as 10s.

Target Allocations

In Indoor events, 4 archers will be allocated to shoot on 1 target. Two archers will shoot, then the next two, before all going forward to score. When given their target allocations, archers will also be given a place that decides their target position i.e. A, B, C or D. In terms of rotation, AB will shoot together and then CD.

In both the AA and WA rounds, there must be 4 targets per target butt. Part of the challenge of the Indoor round is shooting at the correct face. Even if there are only 2 or 3 archers allocated to the lane, there must still be 4 separate faces attached.

Shooting Order

When shooting in the WA Indoor, the order of shooting will rotate each end, as follows:

AB – CD, CD – AB, AB – CD, CD – AB, etc

For the Double Australian Indoor Round, the archers on the lower targets will always shoot first.

After the first 30 scoring arrows the archers will swap target positions – archers shooting on the top will move their targets to the lower positions and the archers shooting on the lower targets will move their targets to the upper target positions.

Target Position

When shooting a single face or triangle three spot target face, which are placed 4 to a target butt, Archer A shoots at the top left target with Archer B shooting at the top right target. Archer C will shoot at the bottom left target and Archer D at the bottom right target.

When shooting vertical triple faces, the four vertical strips are placed side by side and Archer A shoots at the first column from the left while Archer B shoots at the third column from the left. Archer C the second column and Archer D the fourth column.

Shooting Order

For the Double Australian Indoor Round, the archers on the lower targets will always shoot first.

After the first 30 scoring arrows the archers will swap target positions – archers shooting on the top will move their targets to the lower positions and the archers shooting on the lower targets will move their targets to the upper target positions.
