Jonathon Milne has secured his ticket to the Tokyo Paralympics with Paralympics Australia making it official this morning.
Journey To Selection
Jonathon won Australia’s quota spot for the Tokyo Paralympics in the Compound Open Men Division at the World Archery Para Championships back in 2019. However, winning the quota spot doesn’t automatically grant archers their ticket to the Paralympic Games. Due to this Jonathon continued to train hard to ensure his selection.
The COVID-19 Pandemic pushed the Tokyo Paralympics back until 2021 and consequently the announcement of athlete selection was also pushed back.
Since then, Jonathon had been the only Australian para archer to shoot the automatic qualifying score, and we’re pleased to see his selection to the Tokyo Paralympic Team.
Jonathon’s Success At 2016 Rio Paralympics
Back in 2016, Jonathon Milne had a very successful Paralympic campaign winning the bronze medal in the Compound Open Men division. A fantastic effort from his first Paralympic Games!
Since Jonathon’s success in Rio, Australia has continued to develop a strong para archery community under the guidance of Head Para Coach, Ricci Cheah.
Just last month, Jonathon won his division at the 2021 Para & VI National Championships, so he’s on track for success at Tokyo.
Training
Jonathon has spent countless hours shooting, fine tuning and elevating his athlete ability for this moment of selection.
COVID-19 has made the last year difficult and has only prolonged the lead up the Paralympic Games, but it has also provided Jonathon with another year of solid training.
Jonathon trains, under the direction of Coach Cheah, at Sydney Olympic Park Archers multiple times a week. Coach Cheah, has been pushing Jonathon and really testing his mental fortitude through competition simulations in preparation for the Paralympics.

Tokyo Paralympics
A number of other archers have shot qualifying scores for the Paralympic trials, however Australia current does not have any more quota spots in order to nominate archers to Paralympics Australia at this stage. Archery Australia is aiming to send a team of para archers to Nove Mesto, Czech Republic in order to win more quota spots however, this depends on how the COVID-19 situation develops.
