2026 Commonwealth Games Bid

Archery Australia and World Archery have officially submitted a bid for the sport to be included in the 2026 Commonwealth Games, due to be held in regional Victoria.

Archery’s proposal will be assessed, alongside those from other sports, against criteria including universality, competition quality, consumer and commercial appeal, alignment with Commonwealth values and benefits to the host of the Games.

Archery is a popular and well supported sport across all Commonwealth regions, with 46 of the 72 Commonwealth Countries affiliated to World Archery.

28 Commonwealth countries have sent Archery teams to World events over the past five years with athletes from Bangladesh, Canada, Indi a, Malaysia, England, Northern Ireland, Singapore and Australia achieving medals.

The birth of the modern Paralympics was at the 1960 Paralympics in Rome where Australian Archer, Ross Sutton, claimed Australia’s first ever Paralympic Gold medal. His achievements and those Australian athletes at the 1960 Paralympics marked a turning point t o the Para sporting movement within Australia.

An Archery event at the Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games would attract some of the very best of the world’s archers with exceptional teams from India, New Zealand, Australia, England, Canada, Bangladesh, Malaysia, South Africa as w ell as archers from other countries. Within Victoria, Archery activities and competitions take place for all ages; from schools, scouts and camps to masters competitions, from Defence Force Veterans programs to the new Victorian Institute of Sport Archery Performance Program, archery has a strong presence throughout Victoria, across all age groups and geographical locations.

The team event s are an exciting format to watch, as archers work together either in a mixed gender team or in an ex citing, innovative format that will have Para archers shooting alongside non Para archers in a team event. Both of these formats will have an ever-increasing appeal to participants and viewers alike. By showcasing Archery as a sport for all, this bid will outline how Archery at the 2026 Commonwealth Games can showcase Victoria in the best possible light on the global stage.
