Archery Australia proudly hosted a two-day Para Archery Weekend, bringing together athletes, coaches, carers, support staff, and key partners to strengthen the pathway and community for para archery in Australia.
Across the weekend, 10 athletes undertook classification, supported by a network of passionate coaches, carers, and high-performance staff. Classification ranged from quick 15-minute assessments to complex 1.5-hour sessions, with a huge thank you to Craig and Marek for managing this critical process with dedication and care.
The weekend featured expert presentations and collaborative learning designed to empower athletes and their support networks:
-
Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) delivered sessions on the Para Unit, Strength & Conditioning, Athlete Wellbeing & Engagement, and Safeguarding.
-
Paralympics Australia staff Kim, Lisa, and Kate attended to understand the classification process and explore closer engagement with para archery.
-
Courtney van Putten (Amplitude Physiotherapy) highlighted the importance of finding a physiotherapist who understands the demands of your sport.
-
Mat Grey spoke on sports psychology, providing strategies to manage emotional highs and lows for a consistent shot process.
-
Monique Murphy (SIA) provided education on anti-doping, supplement safety, and drug-testing awareness.
-
Damien Cole introduced the UQ Para Hub program, promoting a holistic approach to athlete health in sport and daily life.
-
Ricci guided athletes through the National Pathway Program (NPP), outlining how they play a crucial role in the future of para archery.
A special acknowledgement goes to high-performance athletes Chris Davis and Tom Holland, who generously shared their experiences, answered questions, and provided mentorship that only current para athletes can offer. Their stories brought the weekend to life, inspiring the next generation of athletes to dream big and aim high. Beyond the knowledge shared, the weekend was about connection and collaboration. New partnerships were formed between athletes, Archery Australia, Paralympics Australia, QAS, and support providers laying a strong foundation for the growth of para archery in Australia.
