Compound Archery to Make Olympic Debut at LA28

Archery Australia welcomes today’s historic announcement from the International Olympic Committee and World Archery confirming that compound archery will be added to the Olympic programme at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, through the inclusion of the compound mixed team
event. While the Paralympics currently features competition with both a recurve and a compound bow type, previously the Olympic has only featured competition using a recurve Bow.

Compound archery uses a modern style of bow which is a popular style among archery members across Australia with over 50% of Australia’s membership base participating in compound archery. Archery Australia CEO Peter Bromley said the decision reflects the growing strength of compound archery and will drive increased participation across the country.

“This is a significant step forward for archery. We extend our thanks to World Archery and the International Olympic Committee for their commitment to growing the presence and exposure of our sport,” Mr Bromley said.

“Compound archery has seen remarkable growth across Australia, particularly at the grassroots and club level. The inclusion of compound at the Olympics will open new opportunities for engagement and inspire even more people to pick up a bow and get involved in our sport.”

Australia continues to develop strong compound athletes through its national pathway and high-performance programs. The LA28 Games now offer a new horizon for these athletes to showcase their skills on the world’s biggest sporting platform.

Further details on qualification and event structure will be shared by World Archery in due course.
