World Cup No 1 Shanghai

AUSTRALIA TO SEND MIX OF EXPERIENCE TO WORLD CUP   Australia will send a dozen of its best archers to Shanghai for the opening round of the Archery World Cup in May.   The team is brimming with Olympic and World Championship experience, but also introduces some new names to International competition.   At one end of the scale you have three-time Olympian Matt Gray and two-time Olympians Deonne Bridger and Melissa Mongan.   In the middle you have one-time Olympian, Taylor Worth, and World Indoor champion, Ryan Tyack.   And then you have a list of young recurve archers who are seen as the future of the sport; Victoria’s Alec Potts, and Queenslanders Ingrid Brookshaw and Semra Lingard.   On the compound team you have the experience of former world number two, Pat Coghlan, and WA’s Robert Timms, both multiple International medal winners at a World Cup and World Championship level.   Joining them will be Derek Jacobs, who will be hoping to go one better than at the same event last year, when he teamed with Timms and Mike Brosnan to win silver.   And joining the compound team will be Canberra archer, Louise Redman, who has been in outstanding form this year in domestic competitions and will be making her International debut in Shanghai.   The competition in the men’s recurve will be particularly fascinating, with the four Australians battling it out to be one of the three who go to this year’s World Championships in Copenhagen.   Ryan Tyack triumphed in the recent Australian Matchplay championships in Hobart, ahead of Gray, Potts and Worth, but Australian selectors have opted to wait until after the first two World Cups event before settling on the Australian team.   In the women’s recurve, Sunshine Coast archer Semra Lingard was the outstanding competitor in Hobart, accounting for the experienced Deonne Bridger in the final.   But Bridger is determined to finish her career on a high by competing at next year’s Rio Olympics.   The Shanghai World Cup will be contested from May 5 until May 10.   And in a bonus for Australian archery fans, the finals will be shown live on www.archery.tv on May 9 and 10.
